Over the past several years, the State of California has begun to address its history of atrocities towards California Native Americans, including through the California Truth and Healing Council, which was established by Executive Order N-15-19 in 2019. The Council’s truth and healing work is the only process of its kind nationwide, with an explicit focus on clarifying the historical record regarding the relationship between the State of California and California Native Americans.

The Governor’s Office of Tribal Affairs has partnered with the California Consortium for Urban Indian Health (CCUIH) and Emmy award winning director Jacob Kornbluth to support the filming and documenting of the Truth and Healing Council process in California. It is critical to fully document the Council’s work to ensure that this unique and transformative process can serve as a learning opportunity for Californians – as well as a model for other states and communities across the country. This project will produce short-form content to be used more immediately, as well as a longer documentary after the conclusion of the process — such as this incredible sizzle reel.

At this briefing, you’ll have the opportunity to hear from the Office of Tribal Affairs, director Jacob Kornbluth, and our philanthropic partners about this critical partnership – including recent project developments.

If you have any questions please reach out to Elena Chávez Quezada, Senior Advisor on Social Innovation to Governor Newsom, at [email protected].
