Native American Truth & Healing Convening
Wednesday, February 22, 2023 @ 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm
In June 2019, Governor Gavin Newsom formally issued an apology through Executive Order N-15-19 on behalf of California to California Native American Peoples for the many instances of violence, mistreatment and neglect inflicted upon California Native Americans throughout the state’s history. This represented a major and unprecedented step towards correcting the historical record and acknowledging the state’s wrongdoing towards Native communities.
During this convening, participants will have the opportunity to hear from the Office of Tribal Affairs, Native experts and leaders, and philanthropic partners about efforts to advance Native truth and healing in California.
It will include a briefing on California Native history, how the state’s actions are linked to the current challenges Native communities face today, and the Office of Tribal Affairs’ multifaceted work. It will also include an in-depth panel discussion on Native restorative justice, with an emphasis on exploring the many avenues through which funders can build relationships with Native communities, coordinate efforts, and maintain accountability to support Native truth and healing in 2023 and beyond.
