Briefing: Supporting the Afghan Community in San Diego & Imperial County
Wednesday, September 1, 2021 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
In light of the unfolding situation in Afghanistan, the trauma it brings to our Afghan neighbors, and the soon-to-be new arrivals, the San Diego Refugee Communities Coalition and Catalyst of San Diego & Imperial Counties will host a briefing for funders and elected officials/public agencies on our community’s response, resilience, and needs.
Efforts to address the needs and concerns of residents and those arriving have been under way since early August. Whether you are already doing everything you can or wonder how to help, join us to learn the latest and connect with others.
There are currently approximately 425 Afghan families (1,300 individuals) in San Diego and we generally receive 1/3 to 1/2 of all Afghan refugees that arrive in California. In the briefing we will cover the current situation among Afghan community members in San Diego, anticipated new arrivals, how the community is organizing, and the short- and long-term needs and goals. We will highlight ways to coordinate, collaborate, and support the efforts.
Speakers will be leaders from and working with the Afghan community. Anticipated: Afghan Community Cultural Center of San Diego, Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans, License to Freedom, resettlement agency TBD.
