Strengthening our Democracy

Resources for Philanthropic Engagement

Philanthropy exists to advance the well-being of people. In the United States, few things ensure this more than a well-functioning democracy built by and for the people. From our children’s education to fair wages and access to medical care, whose voices are heard determines how lives are uplifted or challenged. Philanthropy can help ensure that millions in our communities have a way to make their voices heard and have influence in elections and other civic spaces.

As election season approaches, it’s crucial to stay engaged with the issues that matter to our communities and support participation in the democratic process. While most nonprofits and foundations must remain nonpartisan, they can still play a powerful role in elevating key issues, increasing voter turnout, and promoting an inclusive democracy.

Direct voter contact is a crucial strategy for engaging underrepresented communities. By having real conversations, volunteers can address specific concerns, provide tailored information, and motivate individuals to participate in elections. Direct voter contact increases voter turnout and also empowers communities. Local nonprofits are already embedded in the communities they serve and build trust year after year, making their volunteers trusted messengers to those communities. Want to get involved with a local nonprofit doing nonpartisan voter engagement? No experience necessary—all the orgs with voter contact programs will train you.
