If you are a funder looking to enhance your financial literacy and gain valuable insights into the financial health of potential grantees, this is the session for you!  This in-person Fundamentals series program will provide attendees with essential skills to navigate financial statements and 990 forms effectively, enabling one to make informed decisions when considering the allocation of funds. 

Our experts will guide you through the fundamentals of financial statements and 990s, empowering you to understand their layout, structure, and form. We’ll start by exploring the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) financial statements and then delve deeper into the world of 990s, the informational tax returns filed by nonprofit organizations in the United States.

Through practical exercises and real-world examples, you’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of how to interpret and analyze these types of financial documents.

This program is designed to be interactive, encouraging active participation and knowledge sharing among participants. Our skilled facilitators will lead engaging discussions, allowing you to ask questions, share experiences, and learn from one another. Furthermore, we will provide you with practical tips and best practices for vetting grantees, enabling you to make well-informed decisions based on financial data.

Jane Coleman | Tax Senior Manager at Moss Adams, LLP

Jane has practiced public accounting since 2008. She provides tax and consulting services to not-for-profit organizations in various industries.

Jane serves a variety of clients in the not-for-profit industry, including social service organizations, universities, religious organizations, and foundations.

Matthew Dinsdale | Senior Manager at Moss Adams, LLP

Matt has practiced public accounting since 2008. He provides assurance and advisory services to a variety of higher education institutions, not-for-profit organizations, and government agencies. Matt also assists for-profit entities with federal grant funding matters.

Matt has significant experience conducting audits in accordance with Government Auditing Standards and the Single Audit Act and has published numerous articles and spoken at events and conferences on these topics.

Matt is also a member of the firm’s single audit technical committee, charged with reviewing all single audit reports issued by the firm, to ensure the reporting and deliverables both meet firm standards and uniform guidance requirements.

Patty Mayer | Director at Moss Adams, LLP

Patty has practiced public accounting since 1984. She provides tax and related tax planning services with an emphasis on not-for-profit and tribal organizations. Patty works predominately with public charities, private foundations, and tribal organizations. She’s a leader of our Southern California not-for-profit tax practice.

Patty is a member of the firm’s not-for-profit tax committee. She’s an essential tax advisor for various organizations. She provides tax and related tax planning with an emphasis in not-for-profit organizations including public charities, private foundations, higher education, research organizations, business leagues, and welfare and benefit plans. Patty is a quality control reviewer of exempt returns for Moss Adams LLP. In 2018, Patty was recognized as one of the “Business Women of the Year” by the San Diego Business Journal.
