Cost of Access Covered for all Nonprofits and Funders 

As part of this partnership, Catalyst is investing directly in our region by making this resource available at no cost to every nonprofit or philanthropic foundation in our region, as well as all Catalyst members, through October 2028. Our goal is simple: to make shared knowledge available to everyone doing good in our region.

Access & Eligibility

Who can use the Hub and Database under Catalyst’s Sponsorship?

All 501(c)3 organizations in San Diego & Imperial Counties have access to the hub. If your organization does not have 501(c)3 status but has a fiscal sponsor or operates as a funder, you can contact [email protected] to create your account.

Is Catalyst membership required?

Anyone in San Diego or Imperial County can access the hub, and membership to Catalyst is not required. 

Catalyst members also receive exclusive access to direct support from Catalyst staff, who have been working closely with this data for the past year. Our team can help you understand what the data really means—why certain trends are emerging, what’s driving changes in issue‑area funding, and how those shifts connect to real activity on the ground.

How do I get access?

Access is simple and takes less than two minutes: go to impala.digital/catalyst-san-diego-hub and select “Join the Hub.”

I already have an Impala account—do I need a new one?

Nope! Log in with your existing Impala account. 

How long will access last?

Catalyst’s sponsorship provides all San Diego & Imperial Counties organizations with access through October 2028. 

How do I get started with the Hub?

Step 1: Join the Hub

Step 2: Claim Your Organization Profile

  • During onboarding, connect to your organization’s profile to activate your free access from Catalyst.
  • If your organization does not have a profile in the Hub, email Impala at [email protected]  

Step 3: Explore the Catalyst Data Hub

  • Look for the “Includes by org” badge on the Hub reports to see which ecosystems include you.
  • Review a sector’s Key Indicators for trends, and Nonprofit and Funder Lists for organization data.

Step 4: Dig Into Profiles in the Philanthropy Database

  • Open nonprofit or foundation profiles by hovering over an organization in an ecosystem and clicking “View Profile” or by using the Search tool to look up a specific organization
  • Review financials, grants given/received, and funding patterns 

Step 6: Get Help or Training

Premium Access & Cost 

What does “Premium” mean?

Premium normally requires payment, but Catalyst has covered Premium access to the Hub and Philanthropy Database for their members and the region. 

What's included with access?

  1. Philanthropy Database: Over 3M+ profiles for every nonprofit and foundation in the U.S., with grants and funding details. 
  2. Catalyst Data Hub: A collection of curated sector reports focused on different regions and causes in San Diego & Imperial counties. Each sector includes lists of nonprofits, funder, grants. Sector reports can also be downloaded as a PDF report. 

Data Sources & Updates 

Where does the data come from?

Primarily public sources, including IRS Form 990s, Pub 78, EO Business Master File, Auto Revocation List, and the Federal Audit Clearinghouse. 

How often is the data updated?

Data syncs regularly with federal sources. Organizations may also claim profiles and update select information. 

Can my organization be on Impala if we don't have a 990?

Profiles can still be created for nonprofits without a 990. To get set up, you can email [email protected] for assistance. 

Coverage & Scope

What philanthropic data is included?

Institutional philanthropy only (private foundations, community foundations, DAFs, corporate foundations).  

Individual donations aren’t displayed at the transaction level. However, some high-level metrics may include individual giving when it’s pooled together (for example, total funding that comes through DAFs). 

Is government funding included?

Yes—government revenue is reflected in nonprofit financials as reported on 990s. Individual government grant records are not itemized. 

Are sub‑grants included?

Yes, when they are reported by organizations. 

Profile & Visibility

What financial data appears on profiles?

Each organization’s profile has expenses and financial activity reported on 990s, including revenue & expense sources, and grants data. Foundation profiles also include grantmaking insights. 

Can nonprofits see foundation data?

Yes, premium access includes foundation profiles and grant data. 

Security

How is data protected?

Most of the data behind Impala is public. For any data added by users, Impala uses multiple cybersecurity layers.
