Dual Enrollment’s Opportunity for K-12, Workforce Development, and Postsecondary Success

Dual enrollment, also known as concurrent enrollment, allows students to take college classes while still in high school. This can expand the course offerings available to high school students (from vocational pathways to advanced classes), increase postsecondary enrollment, and decrease the time and cost of postsecondary certificates and degrees.

This virtual session will cover the history of dual enrollment and new state funding sources. Participants will hear from K-12 and community college school leaders who are using DE to drive equity and enrollment, and the remaining scale and implementation barriers they face.

Target Audience

This program is open to members of Catalyst, Northern California Grantmakers, and Southern California Grantmakers. This session will be of interest to K-12, postsecondary, and workforce development funders.

Speakers

Maureen Carew, Senior Program Officer, College Futures Foundation

Maureen joined College Futures Foundation in 2018. As a senior program officer, she leads the development and implementation of grantmaking strategy in the transition from K-12 to higher education and from community college to university, under the Student Centric Practices Strategy which include Dual Enrollment for Equitable Completion. Maureen has more than 15 years of experience working for and with K-12 institutions to strengthen the path for students to transition successfully to college. Most recently she held the position of senior community engagement associate at the John W. Gardner Center for Youth and Their Communities at Stanford University where she led research partnerships with school districts, community colleges and community organizations. Maureen previously worked for San Francisco Unified School District where she launched their postsecondary success department and developed partnerships with the Mayor’s Office, San Francisco City College, and San Francisco State University to use data to drive equity goals. Maureen’s prior work includes serving as executive director for San Francisco nonprofits including Leadership High School, an equity-focused charter school. A first-generation college graduate, Maureen earned her B.A. from Franklin Pierce University and her M.P.A. from San Francisco State University. Maureen served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay, and her two children are recent graduates of California State Universities.

Kelly King, Executive Director, Foundation for the Los Angeles Community Colleges

Kelly King went back to college in 2022 to serve as Executive Director of the Foundation for the Los Angeles Community Colleges. As the philanthropic partner to the Los Angeles Community College District, King leads programs and partnerships that support success for the 200,000+ students served annually across LACCD’s nine colleges. Most recently, King served as Senior Program Officer for Education at the California Community Foundation where she managed large-scale efforts to advance a more equitable education system in Los Angeles County, with a special focus on postsecondary access and attainment. Before joining CCF in 2015, King served as Executive Vice President at Focusing Philanthropy where she led a national portfolio of philanthropic investments that included education, health access, and workforce development. King began her career in the education and nonprofit sector at the Scripps College Academy, leading the program to national recognition. King received a bachelor’s degree in politics and public policy analysis from Scripps College and a master’s degree in education policy, evaluation and reform from Claremont Graduate University. King serves on several local boards and community advisory groups including the LA County Anti-Racism, Diversity, and Inclusion (ARDI) Initiative, Reading Partners Los Angeles, Linda Vista Children’s Center, and the Pipkin Charitable Foundation.
