We Draw the Lines: What CA Nonprofits and Funders Need to Know About Redistricting
Wednesday, June 16, 2021 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am
Every ten years, California adjusts the boundaries of political districts throughout the state to reflect new demographic shifts revealed by data from the Census.
With the passage of Proposition 11 — the Voters FIRST Act — in 2008, our state’s redistricting process has been led by an independent panel of 14 citizen commissioners who “redraw the lines” of state and federal political representation every ten years.
These decisions shape how our communities are represented, how our public officials are held accountable, and how well our democracy works for the people of California.
The redistricting process includes key opportunities for communities to weigh in by providing comments or participating in map drawing. It is critically important that Californians, reflective of the state’s demographics, weigh in on the state and local redistricting processes that determine our representation for the decade ahead.
Nonprofits and philanthropy can play key roles in supporting community engagement in the redistricting process. Join us to learn more about the redistricting process and timeline, ways redistricting affects our communities, and strategies for nonprofits and funders to get involved.
