SUMMARY:Tax Equity Series: Session 2
DESCRIPTION:- With major state and federal tax and budget debates on the horizon, California families and communities, particularly immigrant families and communities, may face significant economic hardship in the years to come. Join fellow California funders for a series of engaging and informative sessions exploring critical budget and tax issues affecting the state, including the impact of federal tax and budget measures on California, and what philanthropy can do to influence tax and budget policy discussions. The sessions, featuring expert speakers and foundation peers, will highlight the latest developments, challenges, and opportunities in budget and tax policy, immigrant economic inclusion, and systemic reform. Finally, the sessions will be designed to encourage coordination and alignment across California philanthropy.

SUMMARY:Creative Action: Far South/Border North Initiative Reception
DESCRIPTION:- The Far South/Border North pilot program awarded grants to a total of 78 recipients— 60 individual artists and cultural practitioners and 18 organizations— to support the creation of media, outreach and engagement campaigns. The campaigns aimed to raise public awareness about a range of pressing issues, including public health, civic engagement, climate mitigation and social justice. Working in their local communities in San Diego and Imperial counties, these artists and practitioners identified key issue areas and led public messaging campaigns, showcasing their creativity and innovation to cultivate awareness and catalyze change. Since its launch, more than 70 Far South/Border North-funded campaigns have engaged 700 artists, created 940 jobs and reached people across 37 zip codes in the bi-county region’s most disproportionately impacted communities. City Gallery will present Creative Action: Far South/Border North Initiative, an exhibition celebrating artists and cultural practitioners working in San Diego and Imperial counties. In 2023, the City of San Diego’s Cultural Affairs and its partners launched a regional California Creative Corps arts program called Far South/Border North: Artists and Cultural Practitioners in Community (https://citygallerysdcc.weebly.com/upcoming.html), which pioneered a unique approach to supporting artists and cultural practitioners working to improve the health and well-being of local communities.

SUMMARY:California Funder Briefing - Climate Resilience Under Attack
DESCRIPTION:- The Trump administration has already had a significant impact on climate adaptation and disaster resilience priorities and funding availability in California. The Federal administration has completely frozen or outright cancelled  (https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/12/climate/epa-climate-grants-canceled.html?partner=slack&smid=sl-share)large funding programs like the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities, and the Community Change Grants Program, and we have recently seen the criminalization (https://newrepublic.com/post/192660/trump-fbi-charge-climate-organizations) of awarded applicants for these programs. The President has also signaled that he will dismantle the Community Development Financial Institutions Fund (https://nextcity.org/urbanist-news/trump-executive-order-cdfi-fund-community-development-financial-institution), which capitalizes community development projects across the country in communities not well served by large banks. This comes at a time when communities are facing repetitive climate-driven disasters and are fighting for the resources they need to develop, plan, and implement community-led strategies for resilience.

SUMMARY:Meeting the Moment: Activate Collective Action (Session 2)
DESCRIPTION:- In this moment of rapid change and uncertainty, many in philanthropy are scrambling to figure out what to do next. While a handful of foundations have taken swift action to support grantees – including significant moves to increase payouts (https://www.macfound.org/press/perspectives/supporting-civil-society-in-need-with-increased-giving) – there isn’t yet a groundswell of coordinated action. Meanwhile, nonprofits are going into strategy-and-survival mode to keep their work afloat as our communities face unprecedented challenges.
